1972 Ford Mustang Olympic Sprint Convertible

Owner: Rex Turner

Location: Scottsdale, AZ

Vehicle Overview:

One of fifty Olympic Sprint convertibles made for the Washington DC Cherry Blossom parade. All fifty cars were made with a 302 engine and automatic transmission and AM radio. I bought this example in 2024 in Miami and enjoy driving it often.

Owner's Bio:

Owner of Ford Mustangs since the late 1970s. I own a 1972 Olympic Sprint Mustang convertible and a 1972 Mustang Mach1. I have participated in hundreds of car shows, parades and track events in 15 states at last count with at least ten different Mustangs. I live in California but and moving to Arizona in early 2026 but I hope to make this event in May. I showed my 72 Sprint convertible in the 2025 show and had a great time. I have been keeping track of the 50 convertibles for 40 years.

Build Sheet:

Made a the Dearborn plant on March 23, 1972 as a special promotion for the 1972 DC Cherry Blossom parade on April 8, 1972 per a Ford press release on March 29th. The parade princesses and queen rode in the convertibles as part of the Cherry Blossom festival which is an annual springtime tradition in Washington. The VIN numbers are consecutive and mine is the 5th one of the series. Ford made thousands of 1927 Mustang Sprint coupes and sportsroof models and even Pintos and Mavericks in the Sprnt trim but the fifty convertibles are the most desirable among collectors and enthusiasts. I have been fortunate to have owned three of the fifty made and have meet other owners of these special cars that were only sold at Ford dealers in DC, Maryland and Virginia. I have copies of the build sheet, original sales invoice, and a lot of other documents including the parade program and pictures from the day of the parade and other newspaper articles I have found over the last four decades.
