1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible
Class/Category: Muscle Car (Stock) 1962-1974
The 1968 GTO was awarded " Car of the Year" by Motor Trend Magazine. Total GTO production 88,00 cars and only 9,000 were convertibles. This is what the car looked like in a Pontiac Show Room. The average cost was approximately $3,000 with many options.
This particular build was very limited, based on the body style ( a convertible ), body color and interior color along with the performance options that were ordered with this car. The basic 400 cubic-inch V8-350hp, and a Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrel carburetor. A Turbo-Hydramatic automatic trans. A 12 bolt limited slip differential with 3:90 gears. Power front disc brakes. Rally wheels with Redline tires. The car was repainted to original stock color, and front buckets seats were replaced with 1969 GTO seats, and rear seat was all reupholstered. The convertible top was replaced.
In 1968 when Kathy and I graduated from High School, a GTO was on everybody's wish list. Now we each have a 1932 Ford hot rod. We love cruising the So. Calif. Pacific Coast. We have 6 grandkids. It was always a challenge to take the kids cruising. So we started looking for a classic car with a rear seat. Through a friend we found this GTO for sale. So Kathy and I thought we would reward ourselves with a late 1968 H.S. graduation gift. After some maintenance and upgrades it drives beautifully. It's like driving & riding on a land yacht on the freeways. The grandkids approve and cruise whenever possible with us. We are very active in the Classic Car Culture attending weekly cars & coffees ,cruise nights, car shows in CA. and now in AZ.
